What should you do when using the calabash (dried gourd shell) for the first time?
An example from Argentina: First, take standard charcoal starters, like those used to light a charcoal grill, ignite them, and let them glow in the calabash for 30 seconds. Afterwards, add 2 tablespoons of mate and hot water to the calabash and let it steep for 3 days. Pour it out and then let it steep again with mate tea, 2 tablespoons, and hot water for another 3 days. Only on the 7th day is the calabash ready for its first fresh mate infusion.
